Description: Along with 3 other designers, created a mobile version of an AAC web application. Took charge of identifying and redesigning inefficiencies for various user groups.


Background

CBoard is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) web application funded by UNICEF that helps children with speech impediments communicate. Kids will form phrases and sentences by tapping on tiles with symbols.

After launching CBoard through a pilot program, the creators approached our team and tasked us with creating a native, mobile version of the current app. As a team, we wanted to make sure the redesigned native app continued to be as impactful as other paid AAC apps

The Problem

<aside> 🚨 Although CBoard is efficient in helping children communicate their daily thoughts, CBoard is unable to effectively kids develop and learn new communication styles.

The Solution

<aside> 💡 CBoard needs to adopt features that allow for personalization and customization so each child's unique communication style is cultivated. Specifically, text-to-speech solves the design problem by encouraging higher-level learning that exceeds symbols and is suitable for kids as they get older.

Research

Secondary Research

Since this was everyone's first time working on an AAC platform, our team started off the project doing intense research on designing AAC devices. We wanted to gain a better understanding of the UX considerations that would be front and center for such applications.

User Research

Next, our team had to establish basic information of who CBoard's users are in order to set a baseline for further research on CBoard's current effectiveness. Communicating with CBoard's funders and original creators, we were able to establish the 3 primary user groups and their needs.
